Grafted A. palmatum

I heard back from the grower and they claim it's a bloodgood. Funny but the BGs from the other nurseries around here have much larger leaves and arn't near as " bushey " with longer folaige internodes. This one looks more like Dales. I guess that means it will grow on it's own roots so next year or the year after I can air layer it where I want to.

OK.....well I did stuff anyway. First I gave him a little haircut. Mostly new growth that hag gone a little leggy. Then I took the pot it was in , cut the top 3" off to expose the soil , cut a number of slits in it and placed the tree , pot and all , in a 15 gal nursery container and filled it with bonsai soil. The new soil level is about 3" higher than before an an attem[pt to get roots closer to the graft and possibly above the roots. Should I do anything to the trunk such as nick it as I would do a juniper ?

Here is one of the maples shown before after a serious cutback. about 3 1/2 weeks have gone by and it is covered with new red leaves coming out. I have just cut back the long shoots again so it is much shorter and soon will be tighter and more ramified. The few greenish leaves you see are all thats left from first cutback I posted.

Thanks for the update Dale. I'm thinking of doing a partial leaf removal on mine just to get rid of the scorched leaves. I've got it where it gets 3 or 4 hrs of morning sun but that seems to be too much. The sun here can be brutal and it's been in the 100's for a while now so I think I'll move it under the big pines and let it rest for a while. Maybe at the end of July I can do a partial leaf removal. Or should I do it now , when I move the tree ?
