An excerpt from Bonsai, My Philosophy by Susumu Nakamura

When we Japanese study something, we
have been taught to follow three principles.
The first thing is "Shu" which means to be
consistent by practicing the instructions. of
the teacher or the fundamentals faithfully.
The second thing is "Ha" which means to
break down or tear something apart in this
case change or reject the teaching of the
instructor. Of course, we must have "Shu"
before we can proceed to "Ha" in Bonsai.
The third and final principle is "Ri" which
means to leave, go away, or be independ-
ent.
-------------------------------------------------
Shu -
When you go to Study Fine Art, be ignorant.

Ha -
When you have been in the system for a while,
break it down into basic concepts.
[ Sight-Size ----------- 9 months to break it down,
frightened the teachers ]

Ri -
Take 3 to 5 years to clear your head of the school's
teachings.
From Brother-in-law - K [ trained in Italy - Fine Art ]

Same for European training.

What happened to the part where the student returns to a deeper understanding and appreciation for the teachings of the past;)
Sometimes expressed as when the child realizes that the parent was not as dumb as they thought.

Alexandra,:)

why does what Frank and you say, feel like ----- having had a rough time with children.

I believe one continues to draw on what one was taught, but either finds new
or different approaches / understandings.
At least that is what happens with me.
Good Day

Who (parent) can say didn't have a "rough" time with children? :D
Reminds me of a Chinese proverb which might be appropriate : A good teacher opens the door to you but you have to enter by yourself into the room.

My fee-law-so-fee is those that can, do, those that can’t write about it....
