An excerpt from Bonsai, My Philosophy by Susumu Nakamura
When we Japanese study something, we
have been taught to follow three principles.
The first thing is "Shu" which means to be
consistent by practicing the instructions. of
the teacher or the fundamentals faithfully.
The second thing is "Ha" which means to
break down or tear something apart in this
case change or reject the teaching of the
instructor. Of course, we must have "Shu"
before we can proceed to "Ha" in Bonsai.
The third and final principle is "Ri" which
means to leave, go away, or be independ-
ent.
-------------------------------------------------
Shu -
When you go to Study Fine Art, be ignorant.
Ha -
When you have been in the system for a while,
break it down into basic concepts.
[ Sight-Size ----------- 9 months to break it down,
frightened the teachers ]
Ri -
Take 3 to 5 years to clear your head of the school's
teachings.
From Brother-in-law - K [ trained in Italy - Fine Art ]
Same for European training.
