Been beating on things with hammer(s) for a while but new to bonsai. Am I to understand that the hammer of choice is not the BFH model (big f***ing hammer) commonly used in auto mechanic-ing, that is, even if I was to attempt to beat my trees up.

Actually, there's no controversy at all. It's a fact that great trees have been grown in many different soils, but I don't recall ever hearing of a great tree that was beaten with a hammer during it's development.
