have i done this right ?

I have a downy birch that i found dumped on a fly tip a few years ago and have had it in a pot for few years with no idea what to do with it. But after watching progressions on this site (particularly the crab apple by catfish chapstick) i done this to it (sorry no b4 pics i got carried away when i was moving it this morning and i just saw it and had to do it) do i need to take a bit more off the top or branches answers on a postcard or on apost below if its easier

Cut the big branch off.

Leave the big branch on and let the tree grow for a season.
