Hunkered down in Florida

My parents live in Tampa but they got out in plenty of time and are staying with my sister in North Carolina. Even North Carolina got heavy weather from this storm!
My little bro felt it in Fl and Mom felt it in NC too, tho much softer.
I'm very happy to hear that people are mostly staying civilized and helpful. Fl has better plans for hurricanes than La. I guess. And that is good, we have learned and keep anarchy from becoming the rule. Instead people of all races seem to help all races to escape, often before the gov could respond.
Now you can bet on some new roofing standards and construction laws. So rebuilding will be expensive, but the houses built should be tough. Lets hope folks figured out what FLOOD PLAIN means, and rebuild elsewhere.. Like in Kansas or other place equally far away from Fl....

Better barbecue...

Tampa is really congested. Population has doubled since 2000 with minimal investment in infrastructure. I didn't really like it - even though they lived in a very nice area and had a nice house.

They have signed for a unit just outside of Raleigh. It is located to a Trader Joe's and a Starbucks, so it must be nice!

Better barbecue AND only a short drive from both Asheville and kannapolis!

I love Asheville. My son was being recruited by Duke, and we drove from Tennessee over the mountains, past Asheville to Raleigh/Durham to visit the campus. Asheville is just amazingly beautiful.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts!

We left Wednesday at 12pm and got to Long Island Thursday at 4pm. Drove 28 hours straight, what a trip!

My neighbor has been caring for my trees since I left. We didn't get power back until yesterday so I'm happy I left. It was wayyyy to hot and filthy. People without running water were using bathroom outside. Neighborhood started to stink after just 2 days.

Generators blowing fumes into neighboring houses was causing ppl to be very tense to say the least.

We got hit by tornoadoes at least two, hence much more damage than other areas in Broward.

I had mold growing on the rugs when we left and some of our shoes as well that were in the laundry room that water got in. I haven't been back yet, though planning to fly back and assess damage soon hopefully. Walls were bubbling as well from water leakage.

I am glad all others are ok as well and thank god we made it.

FEMA has us in a hotel in Bethpage for now until the 24th of this month.

We've already started the search for a home in NC. We are going to rent a 3 bedroom initially in NC so we can be there and have time to look for a house to purchase.

I'd rather rent first so I'm not rushed into a purchase. At this point, I'm in no rush.

We've been waiting to move to NC for a while.....everything happens for a reason. I love NC and can't wait to finally be back there. Sad this is how we had to leave Florida, but to be honest, we couldn't wait to move out.

As for the rental house we are going to rent somewhere in the mid west of the state as we want to buy a house in Boone or surrounding area. This we can take time and look at houses until we find what we want.

So.......soon I will go down rent a truck and move what is salvageable to a storage unit in NC awaiting moving it into the new home when we find it.

Can't wait to get back to normally though that will be great!!!!

I'll be on b nut here and there but I have a lot to handle/coordinate right now and tough finding the time to get online.

FEMA process super time consuming as well. Haven't worked since the storm either and that is taking a toll as well, but it is what it is.

Glad to hear you are okay StoneCloud. I wonder if Hurricane Irma has started/will start somewhat of an Exodus out of Florida to places like NC (inland), which are not so brutally hot for so long, but still have mild winters. I left Florida a year ago, and love it in PA. I do hear the occasional complaint about shoveling snow, but with 28" the average for a year, shoveling snow isn't exactly a constant winter chore here.

It's relieving to read you are OK and looking to the future.

It's also good that you are in a position and own the means to rent a house and then buy a new house for you and your family.
May I ask a question though which came to my mind out of your above post : What about people who cannot afford either to rent or much more to buy a new house. Is there any provision for those people from part of the state?

Thank you for your thoughts. This community is wonderful. I haven't had a chance to see and respond to everything on here yet as my time on the net is limited right now.

We have FEMA. A government agency to help with disaster relief for those that need assistance with relocating, moving storage etc....

Funny though they make you a for apply for a loan first PRIOR to any grant assistance.

I've never had to use fema before so it's new to me but I have heard already that some in TX even with mold in their homes were denied assistance.

I feel bad for the families that are going through this and hope that the universe will send positive circumstances their way!

This is a good point. I am wondering how those will fare in Puerto Rico and where they will go
