It's time

Quick question for the single flush pine experts. I'm growing P. sylvestris from seed and have several future shohin with multiple vigorous candles... 14-18 cm + long with a long needle free neck. I'm pretty sure I've read that fully removing such a vigorous candle will force new buds to set lower down in last year's needles but I'd love verification. Thanks.View attachment 558035
Whelp... the deed is done... kind of :) . Some of the candles were fully removed and some were cut back but had some needle fascicles remaining. Let's see what I have... or don't have... in 2-3 months.

Fabulous thread here and great video. Thank you.

Agree. I am planning to study the video and the information here soon. I have 3 JBPs that I have zero idea what I am doing. Beside getting trunk bends (because I wanted to try), nothing has been done to them. They are thriving in dilapidated and rotting grow boxes. I just water them and toss in some Osmocotes once in a white.

the first post was saying "new buds are present"... so you seem to have right condition to cut.

... if somebody please could react to this... so I don't get confused. Thank you.

I think the post was mostly on single flush 2-needle pines, e.g., Scots pine.

Japanese five needle pine is a different beast, but can also be pruned now.

I have applied this technique on Ponderosa and Rigida as well. Works fine.

But ponderosa is waaaaay earlier in my back yard than scots pine is. And I'm working with vigorous seedlings so I'm not entirely sure if it translates all that well.

So with a bit more testing we can include two-to-three needle pines as well.

Thank you so much for clarification. So regarding 5-needles I guess there are two approaches: spring time pruning before needles really form/open than summer (like this post) with cut back to 6-8 "pairs" of needles. Have following question though... buds already formed for next year... are they going to form again after cutting back on 5-needle pine as well?

On younger, vigorously growing trees, yes. I was very happy with the back budding I saw after cutting this tree back last year- https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/will-it-form-buds-this-season-if-i-cut-back-now.60969/. On older, less vigorous trees, back budding is less of a sure thing, I'd think.

Second flush currently pushing almost as hard as some jbps I de-candled back in late June 🤷🏼‍♂️😎
