So I got this maple from a nursery and apparently the rats ate a lot of its barks during this past winter. It was ground layered and now lots roots...

My next question...is it too early to cut it off the main?

Thanks

Why Dave? Looks like plenty of healthy roots to cut now?

It's mid summer and still hot out...separate now and you risk losing the layer if a heat wave develops over the next few weeks. Separating in late summer when the hot weather is essentially over is safer, and the roots will have most of Sept, Oct, and early Nov to establish themselves.

I see. Makes sense. I also have one ready to be cut, a deshojo. Though it's been incred. cool here this summer, I'll wait.

Thanks Dave

I would wait till leaf drop, then separate .
The roots right now look fragile, they will also harden up.
