Just thought I'd give a picture with some size reference. Shohin would be under what, 10 inches from pot?

Shohin has a maximum height restriction of 8 inches from the top rim of the pot to apex.
Shohin Bunjin may be taller as long as the pot size is appropriately Shohin in size.

I have no idea what a "d" is but if this were mine I might be tempted to transform it to shohin due to the large varience in the transition of main trunk to upper trunk. It is abrupt and will always be so.
While the canopy of this tree looks nice in leaf, the tree should be appreciated more in Winter after the leaves have fallen. If the goal is to keep the height it has now, then it will definately need to be grown out in either a box or the ground. It will never thicken in a pot. Keeping low branches cut back and allowing free reign on the upper branches could fatten up that section and help with the overall taper of the trunk.
Either way (shohin or larger )it is worth doing the time as trunks like this are harder to come by and will increase in price as availibility goes down.
Work with the tree for a year or two, a shohin can always be a plan "D" if needed.

"D" should have been "do". I agree with you about having the tree looks its best out of leaf. I guess I was wondering where you would chop to regrow the apex. But now that I know that it needs to be 8 inches from rim of pot, so I now know how low the chop will need to be.

Still waiting on fall color to come to most of the tree. I've turned it 180 to see if it will help. I wish the leaves were healthier and the crimson really popped. I also can't wait to do a fall cutback on my deciduous trees.

Color is finally starting to turn on the benches this week.

Last color update. Next update will be with no leaves and after fall trim. I think I may chop for shohin next year.

Ha yup watering can it is. I was going to overwinter my trees in my yard, but I think I'm going to leave them at NEBG until I build some sort of winter protection in the yard.

Well tonight I decided to do some fall work on this tree. I stripped the leaves, pruned back the extensions, and added a few pieces of wire. It looks better in person than the photos, I'm quite happy with it.

Good job Tom, it is looking very good in the pics, if it's better in person it must be a stunner. It's come a ways since you got it, those classes are paying off for sure. I like your pot choice.
