Little Christmas tree contest? 2023 to 2026.

Well, big box stores really cut back on holiday live plants this year in our area. Stopped in a couple yesterday and was surprised to see only a group of about 30 plants of different kinds in each. None on sale yet. Not sure what will be left after Christmas... 🙄

Shoot. Yeah it can be hit or miss.
3 yrs ago, Lowes had hundreds of live spruces originally priced at 10$.
They ended up off loading them for 75% off.

Good deal for me, but not so lucrative for them. I haven’t seen them there since.

I have one from 5 years ago - guess I don't qualify lol

I think they are catching up

left after Christmas
I noticed this as well. I went around to a few different stores trying to scope out where I might pick one up from once they go on sale, but it's slim pickings this year. The one Lowe's in town didn't even have ANY live potted trees, let alone any holiday red pots. Pretty sure I saw a few 4" pots at the grocery store last time I was that way, so may have to go for a small project this go around

yeah. Last year I didn’t see a single thing anywhere aside from rosemary and Lavender plants in grocery stores.

I was surprised last weekend to see 5 gallon burlapped Colorado blue spruce trees on sale for $30. For the holidays. I may go back this weekend.🤨

Walmart around here has some $50 5 gallon blue spruces. I haven't poked around to see if they're burlapped and/or grafted, but I've been eyeing those to see if they drop in price.

Does this contest have any rules against group plantings? or are you looking for a single tree ideally?

I'm looking around for a tree I'd like to participate but so far it's been a no go. Stores around here don't have any live holiday trees except the full size Christmas trees and poinsettia. I'll keep looking

If I can find a good tree I'm in. Haven't been to a box store since before Halloween but I saw in back of Lowes that they had hundreds of small trees ready to bring out. Most of them are probably Stone Pines, which I have also seen at the grocery store.

Probably too late to suggest, but I think we should extend it to maybe 5 years. If we are working with conifers, especially spruces, a single hard prune and a repot might be all that is possible in 3.

hm.. probably climate dependent. I created one last christmas. Been repotted, pruned twice and rewired once since initial styling...

I think we could definitely let it run longer -5yrs.
Let’s shoot for 3 yrs, evaluate, then see if remaining contestants want to re-evaluate 2 yrs later. 🤷‍♂️

I'm in if I find something decent this year.

I feel like you should know better 🤣

I have one from when I didn't know any better. Was struggling with it when trying a traditional spruce design, so decided to go a bit extreme with it this year. Which reminds me, I don't think I took an after picture, I should do that before it's covered in snow.
I’m curious if there are any particular issues with DAS i should be aware of. Is it just that they grow very slowly, or something more challenging?

I just had a look at the contest from 2020-2023, out of 37 entry’s there was only 7 that submitted final pic after 3 years. Some really nice work in the last contest to.

Yeah definitely. It’s kind of why I think three years is a good time frame for this contest.

At three years, if there’s enough people that want to keep going till five years, we will definitely do that!
