Roy Minarai has just made history winning second prize in the glazed pottery category at Gafu-Ten! That makes him the first western potter ever to receive such an honor. Congrats to you Roy! Amazing achievement indeed. You make us all proud. Below are some pics I took from his page on Facebook.

Wow! That’s amazing! I feel this is a serious milestone. You know, I had heard that the state of bonsai in Japanese society is kind of on the decline... not the bonsai themselves but how society in Japan and particularly younger generations view bonsai. That it is just an “old mans hobby”. When I heard this it made me very sad. I thought about how peculiar that is when at the same time bonsai seems to be reaching new heights of enthusiasm in the western world. In the western world bonsai is driven by the hobbyist not the professional, where it is the opposite in Japan. I wonder if the enthusiasm for bonsai from the western world will help reinvigorate bonsai in Japan in a feedback loop of sorts. It’s really amazing to look at the history of bonsai coming to the United States and now seeing that “return” to Japan coming full circle. Makes me really happy, congrats Roy!
