Interesting, I have always wanted to try one of those. I picked up some seeds in Clearwater, Florida, but had no success in getting them to sprout.

I just noticed the berries, that is a bigger plant than I thought at first. When I saw wild ones on Siesta Key, I thought their craggy bark and deadwood were fabulous. I have no idea how to deal with the leaves. I have seen sea grape bonsai with leaves under 4 inches diameter, but I don't know how to get there.

Cool project

@Leo in N E Illinois ,

lots of sun and encourage many branches. With just one
defoliation a year [ it happens naturally in nature [
you can have 1 to 1/2 inch leaves.
Also more leaves, much smaller sizes.

You can also carefuly cut the leaves with sharp scissors
and the red colouration, returns to the end of the leaf.

Root system is as hairy as an azalea,
Good Luck growing a few.

Perhaps more sun ?

Suggest grow and clip and feeding one month
before , - once a year - defoliation or heavy pruning.

You have to have a special love for the seagrape as it
requires a bit more training to shine.
Good Day
Anthony

This one is very special. Found with a single root stopping
the high tide from pulling it into the sea.

All the branches were grown on.

Here's one I collected from the shores of Lake Michigan. It was so tangled with wires that I was just able to cut them free and drag it ashore. The tangled wire was still on it when I put it into this antique Chinese pot which is less than 300 years old.
