This is a pocket knife thread. Is there a reason we always get off topic? I hope everyone realizes, there are lots of peaceful moments in this world and in our life. But peace itself is made up! Humans are animals and always will be, the only reason we're"civilized" is because of our thumbs. Theres plenty of animals out there just as smart as me, and you. So now, can we please keep looking at knives?

Another one from Dan Harrison out of Ben Wheeler, Texas (the town was named for a legendary mail carrier in the area a century ago). Blade is 4 1/2" D-2 tool steel, 58-59 Rockwell. Handle is 4 1/2" made from stabilized oak. Dan said he got the oak blocks from a guy in the U.K. who said it was made from timbers reclaimed from a 500 year old abbey that was torn down a few years ago. Dan said "at least that's the story...;-)"

Dan Harrison is pretty legendary himself. Made and designed knives for K-Bar, Kershaw and Browning. He's also a character, "local color" with international clientele.

I held the wooly mammoth tooth knife in the video. Saw the raw stock tooth it's made from last summer. Dan was wondering back then how in the hell he was going to make into a handle, since it was roughly three times the size it is now. Funny how some of this raw material stuff is just like cutting down raw stock for bonsai...
The mammoth knife is roughly $9 grand or so (far faaaar out of my price range)...Can't use it for much, but its Purdy...

Actually this was a semi antique collectible pocket knife thread. You know the kind you put in a Ryker mount and hang on the wall with little labels with dates and manufacturer.

"Laguiole" is a village in France.
It's one of the two most popular pocket knives here (the other one is "Opinel", but I can't find mine at the moment). the original one were actually copied on the design of Spanish "navajas" but rapidly became the companion of those who worked in fields in "Massif Central".
At first, the handle was made of cow horn (I have one somewhere), but now they make some with for instance rose wood like this one.
(NB: "companion" comes from the latin "cum" + ""panum", the one with whom you share your bread. It gave the word "copain", a friend, a pal, a mate, ...)
The bee is the mark of the cutlers who work there. Since they had never thought of applying for a patent, there are many cheap counterfeits made in China. Since then, only "Laguiole véritable" are the real ones.
