repot time for these two four and a half year olds. you can see the strong roots pushing against the plastic. im going to see how they do in colanders this year. nebaris are shaping up nicely. cutting back the sacrifices a little on the more natural upright tree to try to get a few more secondary trunks started. going to keep thickening the curvy one. next year I'll probably add another colander underneath to increase growth rate while still keeping the nebari in check. there's a nice balance in the nebari right now and we want to increase ramification, not grow the roots out of proportion to the trunk size.

i took the red maple and kotohime shoots from the pruning i did at repot and stuck them in some coco/perlite. didn't have much success striking cuttings last spring/summer, or with using inorganic substrate that dryed out too fast. i had 100% success rate taking redwood cuttings last year right before the buds start pushing out in a more water retentive substrate. we'll see how they do. my half assed, devil may care style growing doesn't help cloning success rates.

Nice! I hadn't been here in a while.

I love Rubrums and experiment exhaustively with them.

Those southern Reds... They KNOW it's not the south, up here.. I have to protect them like a zone 5 or 6... I lost a bunch and had a few die way back.

I can NOT treat them like Northern Rubrum.

So interesting. Seed source is a fun variable to play with when you are obsessed with genetics and selection.
