Here is a link to the event web page http://www.shermanleeinstitute.org/events/kazari2010.html

In addition the Clark Center was having their Spring Festival yesterday so there were many activities and demonstrations such as Taiko Drums and Kendo. With reservations you could get a tour of the private Japanese garden of the Clark family led by a landscape architect. I really enjoyed that. The weather was wonderful. The Kazari displays were interesting.

Here is the Spring Festival schedule if you have any interest http://www.shermanleeinstitute.org/events/spring2010.html

Al came home with some cash!

It is coming...

I will post each display and give the forum the chance to view the displays much the same way the judges had to. Study the pictures and try to communicate with each artist as they pour their heart out with a blank Tokonoma.

I just needed some time to decompress. Three days at 12 to 14 hours a day is really a grind. Especially if it is the third bonsai related weekend in a row. I still have one more weekend to go and then I can mow my lawn. It was last mowed last November.

Yikes! You may need to borrow a hay baler from a local farmer. Don't hurt yourself or burn up your mower.
I think I speak for all by saying thanks in advance for taking the time to post pics of the event. Always a great learning experience. Thanks Al.

OK here we go.

Study the photo's. Think of these as a display. Toko Kazari is the art of Tokonoma display. It is not about who has the best tree. IT IS about who has conveyed the clearest message.

There were twelve in all that could be judged. Fifteen is the limit for the Museum. Three were not judged for various reasons.

Prizes were given to third. I do not know the ranking past third so don't ask. I was told it was not necessary. Pick your three and rank them. Give a little background into your choices. I am curious how this will turn out.

OK the results:

First place, 2,500.00 dollars No. 2 Katsumi Kinoshita
Second place, 1,000.00 dollars No. 4 Al Keppler
Third place, 500.00 no. 9 Seiji Shiba
