With a branch dying back

big scars

lack of nebari

and ugly roots

Well, is a great spice, and I like take risks so pruned it, repotted it, I made the scars even bigger, and took a video:

I can hardly wait for the next installment!! Very entertaining, and interesting presentation. I think there is some potential here if you are not risk averse. I would ground layer without delay once it's healthy. I don't think you'll be able to overcome that base.

I plan to make some airlayers this year in the sacrifice branches, and maybe the next year, a couple of grafts with them in the gaps of the nebari. If it don't work, the ground layer will be next in the list. Step by step my friend...

Well it certainly has a big healthy root mass, so it should be quick to get a move on. Thanks for sharing this well documented adventure!

Actually, almost all, but the very first, and a portion of the one with the wire.

I plan to make some airlayers in a month or so, when leaves harder enough, I need roots suppliers for the nebari improvement by graft next season.

Right now It can't be greener and healthier!

The subject


The bill of materials


Dry sphagnum moss


I made small portions


Meanwhite it is getting wet, I cut the "pots"

This one was broken in the fight so I took a cutting too, just in case..


I also cleaned a bit the old cut paste in the edges of the wound, with water and a old toothbrush

Nice work, I'm doing an air layer on my Shishigashira at the moment as well. Started it last year but didn't get any roots but it did leaf out again this spring so I've scraped away a bit higher up and re-attached the spag moss in the hopes it will root this time.

In this case I feel like silence is better than the music... techno music feels like the polar opposite of everything bonsai stands for in my opinion

Overal health looks good:



The wounds are closing nicely


It's showing the firsts roots in the airlayers



Despite the fact that some tender tips had been burned by the hot winds of summer
