I was wondering, how many of you use the 'soil layering' method for your trees, where you use larger soil particles in the bottom ,medium in the middle and smaller on top? I know that there is hearsay that doing so helps keep the moister more in the center level of the pot for better health of the tree, but is there any real evidence of it being more beneficial? I have never done this and have never seen a reason to or wanted too due to the extra hassle, but just wanted to hear what some of you have to say about the matter.

Mike, I sometimes put down a bottom layer -- the thinner the better -- of particles larger than the 1/8" mesh I use to cover the drain holes.

Otherwise, no, I don't layer the soil. I've never had any reason to suspect that any of my trees suffered as a result.
