You take it slow and ponder every move if you have never moved before. That really is the way of it. Too often a beginner will watch some of these demos on line and see trees brutalized and then; try to do the same thing with trees that are not ready. You don't learn if you don't do the work but you have to have an idea what you are doing either through experience or instruction, first hand preferably.

This is excellent advice and can be a reminder for even experienced people. Ultimately, I feel I could've waited until winter as that is when I believe the tree will be back to full mature foliage. Chopping a single main branch off may halt this process but the tree is growing strongly and will continue to do so over the next 4 months, I think it will be fine. The progression series is 1o months now, one insult per year +/- seems safe. I will let it rest and grow strongly for 18 months, then I will begin reducing the root ball, should only need to remove 40-50% to get it into a pot I have chosen.
