Once again it is a helmet dome of foliage.Thanks. Yeah it’s tempting to peel the bark off, and I do peal it at times. I also like seeing it shaggy loose bark before it falls off.Looking great!!! Gaining much "age".
Have you tried rubbing that bark between your fingers and gently removing it? I bet there is sexy, red, "new bark", hiding gloriously beneath. (Obviously if the bark doesn't "want" to go, no good comes from forcing it's 'comfort zone')

Agreed! It:s a tightrope walk of what type of "age" you like! Thanks. Yeah it’s tempting to peel the bark off, and I do peal it at times. I also like seeing it shaggy loose bark before it falls off.

This is for a Hinoki but seems similar in aspects so assume it could apply. I watched this prior to thinning out a Hinoki I got this summer and tried to follow suit. So far has been healthyI’m wondering how to go about cutting back fairly hard. Canopy is pretty full but the interior shoots/foliage is dying back.
What’s the best method for ‘chasing back the foliage in this situation?
