Don’t think so. My hope is the roots get stronger and thicker, but not more exposed. Are you planning to continue raising it up to expose more roots, neagari style?
Awesome thread, tree looks great. Is growing the lower branches out to thicken them up an option, or would it be too hard to then get it back in shape? Thickness of the primary branches looks quite uniform top to bottom.Like many of my trees, a bit neglected. Starting to pull these back out. Needs decandled next year. And re wired. But healthy!

Neither have I, so it's just my amateur aesthetic observation, but I think it would take this tree up a notch. Maybe if you already have enough backbudding you can take an undesirable bud halfway up a primary branch and grow that as a sacrifice without having to sacrifice the established desirable branches. Thanks for the kind words.
That’s a good question about the branches. I don’t think it would be hard to do. My sense with JBP (and similar pines) is the focus is often more about the candles (size, ramification, etc) than branch size. But I’ve never grown or trained a world class pine from scratch, so maybe that’s worth considering![]()
Possibly. Lots of trees that need attention.Plans to clean this one up soon? Tis the season!
I wish I could say it was on purpose… but the net effect is the same all together.[
Well done! It’s a wise hobbyist who recognizes their tree needs a break… and actually gives it one
Cheers
