@Forsoothe! , @penumbra ,

when we make our soil, the organic migrates to about 1/4 inch under the
inorganic, it seems to form a barrier, Our weeds are mostly pilea and lawn
grass.
The tree domes are fairly dense, rain has to be heavy to penetrate.

Penumbra, 40 years of doing, allows us to have many practices that may
confuse you.Like diagrams that are drawn to anticipate Design changes.
Do you place your trees 3 times their greatest length or width away
from you when working on them?

Do you go out and draw the best parts, so you can charge up your
memory. Let the mind then mix it up for you.

Or do you sit. hovering over the plant when working on it ?

Most folk just do cookie cutter trees.
Bad versions of already existing Bonsai trees.

But hay, this is not Traditional oil painting or Classical Sculpture,
it is a hobby --------------- who cares?
Good Day

Nah, they’re just the cheap red plastic handles and stainless blades. I just keep them handy tucked behind a couple pots. They’re getting old and abused, but work in a pinch.
All of mine are pre-bonsai so need to grow and gain strength so I’m rarely pruning. I will say, though, that more than once I’ve used the scissors on my Swiss Army knife to do a quick prune...

The idea is - focus - you water you observe,

Unless the Bonsai are at eye level, how do you see your design?
AND you need to see against a plain background.

Ever notice how many image from above andf not front on?

Above image makes the effort look dense.
Front on shows how sparse.
Good Day
