Decided the apex needed to go so deep breath, cut & jin... Big pot needed for bigger extension of the bottom cascading branch. IMG_20200727_203815.jpg

Willowleaf ficus that I repotted today. It's been in this pot for three years, I used a soil mix of lava, pumice and diatomaceous earth. The roots were not very extensive, so I switched to a Boon mix with a little composted bark (about 10%). It's growing well after dropping its leaves this spring, which it does once every year or two when I move it inside or out. Kind of a fickle tree. I've had it for 13-14 years, it was maybe 10 years old when I bought it. Kind of a slow grower due to auto-defoliating every so often.

I don't like this tree. I can't see the tree on the inside of all that foliage, and I'm pretty sure there's something magnificent inside there. I think if the foliage was plucked to allow the viewer to see the architecture holding up all those leaves such that clouds of leaves held above major branches were exposed, this could be a striking design worth a lot of commentary and probably plaudits. This tree needs to get plucked.

Since it dropped its leaves this spring, I'm letting it recover and grow out a bit before pruning it back, then I'll thin it and probably add some wire. You're right, it's just a mass of green right now.
