The Tree Thread

I have always enjoyed this azalea, both in bloom and without flowers.

Here is a mystery azalea that I dug from my Mom's house. It was originally purchased by my brothers ex-wife and after she was gone and he decided he didn't like it anymore, it went to my Mom. I was able to talk her out of it last Spring, so it's in its' 2nd year in a pot. I thought it was a Kurume because it blooms really early but it's also thrown out 3 or 4 random blooms this fall, so now I'm wondering if it's actually an encore hybrid. It's got a long road ahead but I like it.View attachment 163277
Looks good. This is an Arakawa JBP project tree:

Such a great base! Foliage is nice and snug as well.
My JBP project here needs to be cut back hard to chase the foliage back. Not gonna lie, I'm nervous about how much would be safe to remove.

Love this tree so much. Just finished my fall wiring and cut back. The shoot in the middle is an experiment late season thread graft. I've consistently observed the cambium on my oaks swelling in the fall as well as throwing out one last flush of growth. I desperately need a branch in that spot so I defoliated one of my strong shoots and threaded it through. Unfortunately I made the hole a little tight and lost a lot of buds pushing it through. Removed all buds behind the entry hole so may it will live. Just an experiment so if it fails I can redo it with better timing.

Looking more tree like though! Come a long way in 3 seasons.

Oso, I rather like this one. Not so much as a bonsai, it’s more abstract art, using bonsai materials (plants, wire, pot, etc.)

Ok, here’s my JWP grafted onto a Lodgepole trunk as displayed at the Carolina Expo show this past weekend:

Lovely display Adair!

Amur maple October 15, 2017.

Looks great, Adair.

My cypress needs a haircut... very difficult to photograph due to its height and where it’s located.
