Alaskan Yellow Cedar. Cupressus Nootkatensis. Collected approximately five years ago. The tree was bent flat on the ground with heavy snow load and at the time. Of collection had very little healthy foliage. The tree is progressing nicely , difficult bending is complete and branches placed for further compactness. Current size is 40 cm or 16 inches high.Foliage is being thinned and compacted in stages. This picture shows the grow out stage and it is in need of thinning and cutback again. The hint of formal design to come is beginning to show on this unconventional form.tree.JPG

Poor pictures of a nice little JBP I picked up at the Winter Silhouette show. Got to meet Mrs. Valavanis, who was beyond a pleasure to talk to and buy from. A seriously nice woman, not withholding on her knowledge about the species. I look forward to seeing her again at other shows and developing this tree! That, and ordering a beautyberry from their catalogue ASAP :D

Very nice Brian. I don't think I have ever seen a Hawthorn bonsai. DSC_0188 copy 2.JPG We went from summer to winter in a matter of a couple of weeks. Has never been much above freezing since the first of November. Our winter color was almost nonexistent. It's a good thing I got my stuff put away in October.

Bonsai is a tough sport up North. I had never experienced good fall colors on the Bonsai trees until we moved south.
