Twisted Trees

Wow, I wish I had access to such cool pines. I wish I was into this when I was living in CO, driving my Jeep to tree line and climbing fourteeners!!

No kidding! I've done some backpacking there too...before I was into bonsai...of course. But if I had been, I don't know that I would have ever made it past tree line ;) Which ones did you climb?

Hey Rob, Dario and everyone, Just a heads up... I'm posting some small junis and pines in a new thread here in a few.

Whoa awesome trees! Dan you may just have some of the best collected trees in the country if you keep this up!

Thanks Ben! My intent is not to compete with Randy, Andy, the Colorado guys and everyone else for best collected trees... but I certainly do want to be collecting the best trees I can find. And if I can match the quality they are finding, then I'm a happy :)

The trees are here, and we live right in the middle of some of the best trees in the world. I hope we can do them justice and get them spread around to people who will appreciate them for what they are.

Thanks Don, I hope so too!. I've heard that these twisted ponderosas are notoriously hard to establish; I'm not sure why that is... -- We have several that were collected this spring, so I guess we'll find out first hand.

I bought one of Andy Smiths Burlap Bonanza trees before I knew I might be moving to a climate it wouldn't grow in early this spring. It's doing well here in Brooklyn, it was late to push it's candles but they're extending now. Didn't give it any special treatment other then wiring it to the 4 corners of the pot so it wouldn't sway in the wind, and adding significantly more granite to my mix. I have one of his older established collected trees as well and it's happy and healthy. I think it's just important to make sure they dry out inbetween.

Do yours twist Ben? We have a lot of ponerosas, but for some reason I've heard that specifically the twisted ones are more difficult. I really don't know if it's true or not.

Here's another twisted pondy that Steve and I collected this summer. I'd say nature did a great job of styling this one so far too!

This one will likely be available on our blog next spring/summer. If you haven't been there lately were getting some trees up finally. (I gave up on the regular website... linking the domain to the blog, as I found out that I can sell trees there. :) ) http://backcountrybonsai.wordpress.com/collected-trees/

And.... another. This is one of Steves personal trees.. but I'm trying to arm wrestle it from him... ;) Love this tree!

That is a very cool tree Dan! And looks very happy in that pumice too ;) Thanks for sharing!

Love that second pine. If I were steve Id hold on with both hands.
