Watching Hurricane Issac

It seems to have mostly missed Fl., at least central Fl. near Kissimmee where my uncles wake was. On the way down i was passing Texas electrical trucks in groups of 4 to 8 at a time. I hope it breaks up before it makes landfall.

If only we could harness the power of the vortex,i'm thinking some sort of hardened turbine possibly mounted horizontally.

Like the fans one sometimes sees mounted on commercial vehicles but larger and with an intake cowling designed to increase the air pressure over the blades.

Probably you would want the tapered and spirally fluted rotor to form the curved underside of the cowl and the coils and magnets to be about the shaft under the cowl hood for ease of maintenance,it's the MK2.

The MK3 introduces gears so the user can have greater control of the output to be set according to predicted windspeed.

The MK4 is fully automated.

Klytus, We have all kinds of those in Iowa - there called windmills. Word on the street is they cost more to operate then the money there are suppose to save. There is no way to store the energy. When the wind blows you either use it or loose it.

Then there is the trouble moving them around to where the hurricane is, maybe i f they would cooperate more, we could get them to blow on the turbines instead of moving them around.

You have them in your yard to provide power for times when the prevailing wind speed means you are off the grid,simple.

Klytus, I am talking about windmills that cost millions of dollar to build and install and maintain. The ones in the backyards are probably several thousand to buy and install. Maybe a good option if you have several thousand dollars your wanting to spend for temp. power. Natural gas is a much cost effective option. I wish we could figure out how to store the energy from wind power.

Big batteries, every forth house to be demolished to make way for storage batteries, so we can try to sustain on wind and solar power, will yours be next. news at 11

I was thinking more than enough power for your fraidy hole lighting,kettle and a toaster,not to provide enough energy so your endevours can be viewed by aliens in orbit.

Maybe storing wind power electricity could be accomplished by geology,a coal mine or somesuch.

Yeah, I'm sure the folks in the path of this hurricane are busy contemplating how to harness it for power...

100+ mph wind can't be harnessed, it mostly just destroys stuff.

Good luck and God speed everyone in this storm's bullseye. It ain't a huge one, but it's nothing to take lightly.

This was the beauty of my semi enclosed turbine design,it only grabs enough air to remain within nominal operating parameters.

Hurricanes happen every year as do Cyclones,quite a market.

There is another storage method that of wind powered water pumps transfering the energy to the dam reservoir.

After it's been converted to steam by solar perhaps?

It's hot so you can turbine the energy of of it before it returns to the cool state as the potential energy of gravity.

One of the reasons I have no desire to live in Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, etc. We get hurricanes up here but not as often or as strong and snow storms sont usually rip your house apart. Good luck to everyone in the path of Isaac.

We survived just fine! Today we could finally come home, due to the roads being
blocked off by water and debris. But we're home now and doing good.
