What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

My busted reciprocal saw was repaired and shipped to me. Less than two weeks from the day I shipped it out. Got a nice note from the repair guy too. Ridgid warranty is legit.

Placed an order with Kanashin the other day. I bought a branch cutter and tweezers in March and that whole experience and quality of their tools convinced me to upgrade a few more of my tools. Even splurged on a completely hand made set of trimming scissors (601A). But I pulled back the purse strings a bit by getting a less labour intensive but still high quality steel pair of Ashinaga style scissors(36A instead of 36D) that savings allowed me to buy a smaller set of well priced scissors 39A. There were a couple more upgrades, 6B low profile bud cutters and another slim profile blue steel trimmers. I wished I could justify( afford) the all handmade line but getting the lesser labour intensive but still high quality blue steel versions i think will be pretty great. I really feel buying any quality products from Japan represents a very good bargain these days. Even for the Canadian dollar.I appreciate the information they put on their website and its a real pleasure dealing directly with Kaneshin in Japan.

I recently got a couple really nice tropicals delivered from Wigert's Bonsai in Fort Myers, FL. I've bought from Wigert's multiple times before, and I always highly recommend them.

The first is a "Helen Johnson" Bougainvillea. This is a dwarf cultivar of Bougie and grows very slowly. It produces bright pink bracts with little white flowers. The trunk on this specimen is awesome and I can't wait for it to start blooming. It came planted in a bright red glazed pot from Willow Bonsai in South Africa. I'm not sure I like the color together with this tree since the blooms will already be a shade of red. I might repot it next year into a blue, green, or yellow glazed pot instead.

The second is a Parrot's Beak (Gmelina philippensis) pre-bonsai. This one has tiny little leaves and will eventually produce yellow flowers that hang down and look like a parrot's beak, hence the name. It's in a cheap plastic pot with plain dirt for now, but I'm going to get it into a mica training pot with proper bonsai soil before too much longer.

Both of these species are cold hardy down to zone 9 (about 20 degrees Fahrenheit or roughly -7 Celsius), so I'll be keeping them inside from November through February like my other tropicals, just to be safe.

For future deeper dive into Japanese maples.
Took advantage of sales from Mr Maple and Conifer Kingdom

From left to right
Saiho, beni Hoshi, katsura, mizuho beni, orange dream, and yezo nishiki

The saiho doesn't seem to have appreciated being stuffed in a box and shipped so we will see how it does. They all need to recover and grow a lot before I can start playing with them. Main thing right now is to overwinter them and probably repot them in spring then let them grow. All are grafted. I hope to air layer the ones that will do that easily when they get stronger, probably in 2026. Might take cutting first on the ones that will do that readily and do the air layers in a future year instead. Forget which one is more of an unknown (have to consult the chart) with regard to cutting and air layering so I'll try cutting first then an air layer if those work.

This seems to fit your style well!
😉... right!?!

Won't lie. I don't tend to bid against ones I know. That said...it had a BIN option and that one didn't take it. So...anyone could have snatched it from the one.

*I can justify anything... when I want something sadly. 🫣🙃

Seems like a lot of work went into doing that little pot... One of a kind!😁

Most certainly! I can't wait to see it first hand. So tiny...yet so detailed. The fingers on the lip of the pot. 🥰... but I especially like the hand over the face image.

I really am glad my super hero power is justification. Because...I totally justified the buy. Breaking my golden rule to not bid on something unless I ask one how serious they are on something. *That's if I want it so bad I can taste it. Someone else could have nabbed it for the BIN.

Well...I just told one this morning. I wasn't looking to add more trees. Other than I've a Hawthorn raft coming in for 2025 to buy. But I had just done a headcount and was more than shocked. As I've tried to keep my numbers moderate as I do winter in a controlled cold greenhouse.

But this had a take me home /BIN price. So this crepe myrtle slipped in by my surprise...after my conversation this morning... and before noon. 🤣🙃

Base is 7 inches across. 11 inches tall. Absolutely up my alley.
