I went to an event at one of my teachers gardens that he calls “the Bonsai Experience”—sort of half class, half hands on works. I found it interesting that it was partially for people who don’t wish to own bonsai, but just want to know more. Lots of fun, and especially interesting meeting the other participants.

One of the tasks I was assigned was pinching the buds on this Ezo spruce forest.

Also had an amazing lunch prepared by his wife. Smoked brisket and salmon, and guava struedel are pictures, but there was also some roasted veggies, salad, and other pastries.

I also admired this mountain hemlock composition, but I’ll be withholding the picture as it’s being considered for the Pacific Bonsai Expo!

Beautiful composition and nice spread for lunch 🌲

Still recovering from surgery.
Writing out tags to put in the bonsai trees that need to be repotted and trying to find ways to lure my bonsai friends to my house to repot trees. What are good bribes besides beer and whatever elms and mulberry trees they can dig out of my yard?

I've graduated to eating turkey. Waiting for my girlfriend to get home from the store so I can use a laser pointer to tell her which trees to put these in.

Beer and laser pointers. That’s my kind of party 🥳

Transplanting some jbp, Scots pine larch and crabapple seedlings....found a "monster" Scots pine 😳 ...pictures are an example of the normal seedlings and then the monster....I saw a week or so ago that it looked like I had a " twin" but was really surprised at the roots this one had ..no tap root just ALOT of fine roots. Planted in a one litre rootpouch ( folded down) ...really interested to see how this develops 🙂 20240414_120008.jpg20240414_121909.jpg

Technically I'm a day late (but no dollar shorter!). I picked up another FB Marketplace freebie! Doing what I can to not break the budget or murder "desirable" trees while building experience and getting hands on.

This Weigela florida 'Wine and Roses' was uprooted by the homeowner, listed on FB Marketplace, and put on the curb for the "special" individuals, like me, to pick up.

It's unlikely to yield anything remarkable in visual form, but will provide a great opportunity to build my experience while satiating some urges to poke trees when I don't need to.

I further split the bush up, and ended up going to basically bareroot in the process, for better or worse. I ended up with ~8-9 divisions/separations with maybe 3 showing some girth and character. I failed to grab pictures during the process, but I'll grab some of them today.

It was a fun morning.

Going to do some perennial planting... have some left over christmas arborvitaes to drop into the landscape, and also two more roses the wife picked up. (Plum Perfect and Koko Loko). It brings the rose count up to 11 now.

Moved (almost) all the outdoor trees from the garage to the patio for the season - the only ones staying behind a little bit longer are the Blue Atlas Cedars that are recent repots, and the poor little Trident Maple I butchered at a workshop that is (as yet!) still clinging to life. They'll still get supervised outings when it's not gusting windy as it is right now.

Happily, the (hideously grafted) JWPs I bought off Etsy that arrived with tiny root systems choked in clay seem to enjoy their new pond baskets and are budding out!

Don't get me wrong, they're still pretty ugly. :p At least they're alive!

Best laid plans of mice and men often go awry

Wanted to repot 3 trees today but as I was half way through the first one, the sky got dark and it got cold
Just before I finished it, the rain started.
So I finished it up, put all the tools and things away and went inside.
After about an hour, the sun came out again.....but I was already cleaned up so Ill have to do the other 2 another day.

I got this burning bush out of the deep training pot it was in into a bonsai pot
It had a huge mass of fine roots that filled the whole pot.

This is one of the few species Id feel confident in taking off a large amount of roots mainly because its almost all fine roots.

20240414_134824.jpg

I cut off 75% of the root mass and finally gave it a nice pot of its own.
I would NEVER do this to a pine

As much as I wanted a brief reprive from repotting, the long awaited arrive of consistently warm weather has awakened my Snowbell and Ginkgo.

Not much in the way of excitement with repotting this one. Moving it from an improvised training pot the previous owner made by cutting down a nursery pot, also an upgrade on the soil. Honestly a very big fan of the tokoname grow pots so far, good compromise of functionality, price and attractiveness.

Ginkgo is also nothing much to look at, got it at the end of the season last year on ultra clearance. Another repot mostly for the purposes of eliminating exceedingly course roots, incorporating a nicer soil and not having to look at big nursery pots on my bench.

Other than select pruning, I think this one is destined to just pump growth for a few years and see where it's taken itself by that point.

Today I got a really cool opportunity to meet a fellow Bnut @Dav4 What a super nice, knowledge, and generous person, really nice talking and learning from him for a couple of hours. He's got the kind of trees you see at shows, and it was really inspiring to see the hard work and dedication in person. I ended up helping him with his too many trees problem, and bought 2 JBP & 2 Tridents that he did some work on, and I got to see the raft in person. 😍

Thanks again Dave, very kind of you in so many different ways, and we shall meet again. :)

I use bungie cords because of the wind, I learned today that you can also wire them to the bench. Glad to see your JWP budding out...mine hasn't. 🤔

I potted up three Red Pine seedling I got as a gift from Dave today.

Spent the entire day cleaning weeds out of my "other" collection, which has been stowed away in a heated greenhouse all winter. True chaos. Got the greenhouse all taken down and up in the attic. It's truly a plant party here now.

Cleaned up the veggie garden a bit. dropped in some spinach and chard transplants. already see some lettuce coming up from stray seeds from last year. Kohlrabi is a holdover from last year for seed saving. Still need to lay down some new path mulch and clean the back 1/3 up.
