I was adjusting my trees under the shade cloth. It felt slimy under the American hornbeam’s pot—like algae—and looked under it to find this.

Any idea?

This could be mycorrhiza which is beneficial. Hornbeam is associated with myc fungus.

On the other hand it could also be slime mold which in develops in wet warm conditions.

In any case you can probably safely remove all that on the exterior of the pot and the drain hole

It was loaded with mycorrhiza when I turned it to a different front earlier this year.

I was also gone for a week and had it on an automated watering system. Not sure if that’s anything worth noting.

I’ll just scrape it away and carry on.

My bet is myc. It’s grown because of the watering and heat.

Looks like some kind of fungus.
Smelled like a mushroom. Convinced it's the mycorrhiza that grew out of control with the heat, automated water, shade, and lack of air circulation.

that's friggin disgusting. slime mold was the first thing that came to my mind, but I'm stupid. So who knows
I thought I grabbed hold of a slug underneath the pot at first. Worse things to grow around your bonsai, I suppose.
