Winter plans?

With autumn just two weeks out and knowing that winter soon follows. I think I'll use the slow time to really fine tune my soil mix for my trees and my area. That got me wondering.

What do you plan to do this slow season, once everthings tucked away, when you need to scratch that bonsai itch?

in my garden i wire, carve, de moss or remove weeds and spent fertilizer from soil surface, slip pot, re pot, prune, style. photograph trees after styling. deciduous trees are at there best in the winter.
always something to do in my garden.
nothing is tucked away, maybe the odd yew gets shoved under a bench but conifers can also be worked over winter.

Bring in and care for the tropicals.

Start seeds indoors under grow lights to extend the growing season. Keeps me busy during the winter months.

My main goals for winter are:

1) Prepare a larger area for ground growing.

2) I have soil components too big for the trees Ill be repotting, so there will be some tarp and hammer work with lots of sifting to while away time on the coldest days.

3) I plan on buying a calendar and blocking out times for general work on my trees so I don't let the best windows for work slip by again in 2020.

4) Winter tends to be the time I read the most and watch videos. I picked up the bonsai empire deciduous courses and will be watching those and rewatching Bjorns intermediate courses.

5) I enrolled in my local clubs basic courses and will have at least one workshop in the months of Oct. Nov. Feb. and March.

Along with all that Ill be doing the usual dormant spraying and disinfecting of all my benches and work areas, so yeah, I dont think Im going to be bored this winter.

The plants are already reacting to the Sun.
Relax and do a few paint by numbers - wall decoration for the houses.
October to Christmas is slow time.

I wire in the winter almost everything. Helps to have good storage options if you want to do this.

For the next few weeks I will continue to fertilize, clean up pines, wire a few things and just keep the weeds out. I can even do another round of trimming on some things like Seiju elms. Some time in early December I will take everything off the benches and get set for the winter. By mid January it will be time to start repotting. In the downtime I'd like to reorganize my shop, build some new shelves, etc.

That assumes winter or even fall ever comes. It has reached 100 degrees several times the last week. It should cool off to mid 90's this week. Only once has there been measurable rain since the beginning of August.

Yea i get the feeling its going to be another late winter with snow into April again this year.

Besides work there isnt much else to do here.
Trees are frozen and under a couple feet of snow.

There will still be some wiring and pruning on the outdoor plants and I have some tropicals to work with, but I will mostly concentrate on making pots.

I tend to drink a lot of bourbon during the winter... but I'll wire pretty much everything out between October and March... and I won't even tell you about all the needle plucking!
