I finally visit my local nursery. Picked up 2 wintergreen boxwoods. I thought this trunk (on the first one) could be something interesting with time. And it’s got lots of roots - I had to pull it from ground. The pic doesn’t show much but it has a fairly distinct slant further up.

Nice find for yah. Have fun with them... You can get lots of them for fairly cheap so I wouldn't worry too much if you mess up on styling it or want to try again. But they do hang around for a very long time with minimal care so if you keep doing bonsai as a hobby you'll be see your success or failure for a long while. 😀

I am a bit unclear as to whether I should leave these hanging roots alone until later in the season or early spring to repot - or do something about it now. Any thoughts?

You can pretty much repot boxwood trees any time without much harm. But that said they need to be healthy and it won't be a bad idea to reduce the foliage at the same time if you decide to repot now. But another word of advice would be to not repot if your in an area that gets a lot of hard freezing temperatures. If you area gets the very occasional freezing temperatures then] probably protect the tree if your worried about it freezing overnight. And boxwood is about the only species that you can do that with as far as repotting anytime.
