Won a Japanese Hornbeam at the club

What soil does it need?
Books say don't let it dry.
Any lava?
Compost with lava?

Also some controversy over shade or sun.

Don't everybody jump in with answers at once!
I potted it today with a lot of mulch and ....some.... lava and it's sitting in a water tray to give it some evaporative moisture and it still looks good after a FULL THREE HOURS in my care.

Scratching my head...not familiar with the species...but,why not ask club members when there were ones present when this was obtained? The best knowledge is from one knowledgeable of your own climate and tree species.

Hey Mike!
I don't have the Japanese model but the American one likes a little moisture. Toss in some kind of organic component to hold moisture like pine bark.

I'd get it out of the water tray. Not necessary and could cause some issues with roots if the water wicks up into the soil.

Care is straightforward. Sun exposure can vary depending on your location. I'd give it afternoon shade in your location. I've noticed they can get sunburned in hot periods during the summers here in Va.

Would still get it out of that. It doesn't provide any benefit AT ALL...and FWIW, if this is inside, it will die.

The techniques in the links would probably work for most hornbeam species.

I thought lava is the one of the dryest, or will dry out fast, so for wet soil (which u never want), better use acadama or sphagnum moss ) Potting soil will soak it the best, but will drown ur tree's.

You must water it every two hours, repot every second weelk using different potting soils brands every time, and of course, keep it indoors... Reminds me of my first few trees...may them RIP.
