WTB: Satsuki Azalea

It's a Nikko

This tree arrived today and as promised, here are a couple of pictures. It's a Nikko cultivar. The tree is approximately 14" tall with a 4" trunk and 7" nebari.

The search is now switched to find a more suitable pot. Something rectangular, with softer corners and edge lip. if you have different opinions, I'd love to hear from you.

I will try to update this thread along. Thanks for looking

even if I wanted I could not even think about getting a tree like that down here.

I love it!

History

A bit of background/history of this tree: This tree is approximately 35 years old and was grown from a cutting. 3 years ago, it was imported from Japan.

Agreed with Victrinia, Scott is a great guy to deal with, and according to him, he has a few of these Satsuki Azaleas, all are impressive

I want to know too but was afraid to ask...even via PM (don't want to have a broken heart). LOL :D

I don't know if there is a unwritten rule on this site. We share all kinds of information why not price? I would be willing to let anyone know what I paid for any tree I have. Perhaps the seller might have a problem.

Would it be rude to ask what a tree like that costs? Gorgeous!

No worries, I paid close to 2K for this one, including shipping costs and insurance. Hopefully I did not start something that I did not mean to by disclosing this info, but wanted to share to help others

You may already know that Satsuki demands a bit of premium, and there's the lengthy quarantine time, all this adds to the cost of the tree. I wish it wasn't the case, but it is.

Thank you. Well worth it. Seems like you really got a great deal. Your patience and research paid off.

The tree is very awesome! like in a very awesomely way!
2K... I wish I would be able have the money to buy something like that! Definetly worth it!

A while ago, I have decided that I will acquire less number of trees, but those that I do acquire are of better qualities and or potential. I have found since then is I spend less time watering/fertilizing and taking care a bunch of trees and more time enjoying the ones that I have in my possession.

Thanks everyone for your interest, have a great day!

I probably spend a quarter of that amount, say $500 per year, maybe more buying untrained, young stock almost every year. I usually spend it $20 or so at a time, but in the end, I am spending somewhere in the vicinity of $500 a year. In the end I kill about an equal amount of young stock, more often than not by neglect, too much to keep track of. I should just stop buying stuff for 4 or 5 years, maintain the hundred or so sticks in pots. My collection will atrophy down to a size I can manage, and then adopt the get rid of one before I buy one method. Then I could justify spending more for an individual tree.

It really is a smart way to go, and at 59 and a half, I don't have time to develop 50 yr trees from seed anymore. Though I am starting seedlings every year, the seedlings I start now I do not intend to have to the finish. I am starting seedlings for others to finish. I really would like to have 5 trees that are exhibit worthy, and I should really just start picking up one piece of more mature stock and stop spending on so many immature sticks in pots. Focus, that's what I need, focus.

You have a nice azalea there. Very nice. Well chosen.

I think that is a good approach. I'm thinking of heading in that direction as well.

Time Management

Good discussion, everyone, thanks .

As I attended one of the meetings at our local bonsai club a while back, the topic we discussed was time management. You know, I've heard it from all other angles before, but it hit home that night: We all are given 24 hours a day, not a minute more, it is up to us to maximize our own accomplishments/achievements. I felt that if I had a bunch of so so trees that I had to tend to, I will end up with less time for things that are important to me: my family, my job etc.

Don't get me wrong, some people have the knowledge and techniques that seem to be able to have hundreds of trees in their collection, but having scaled back so far is one of the best decision I made in bonsai.
