The "So?" response to bonsai rules.

Just breaking rules doesn't make your art great. Amateurs follow rules because they aren't Mozart or Van Gogh. Now, bonsai also has a horticulture aspect, as well as a much more casual one where having a bonsai is more like having a pet in plant form. But if one is talking in terms of high art, an amateur cannot just say 'I will just break all the rules and it will be art'.

Many artists first learn how to follow all the rules, so only then they know how to best break them.
Then you have the level where you are so famous, you can literally call anything art and people will worship it. Be it Banksy or maybe Kimura in bonsai.

So Willie Nelson learned rules (like the rule of what strings to put your fingers on to make a C chord) before being able to intuitively create music

Every great surreal / abstract / modern / whatever artist learned perspective first

It doesn’t really matter, but yeah, your examples are of rule followers. I don’t think I know any greats who didn’t start with the rules. Maybe Werner Herzog because of his upbringing?

Do whatever you want, it’s just not some badge of honor the way you think it is to not care. Doesn’t mean you can’t have fun!
This is the problem with this country: This misguided, harebrained idea that being a maverick, and individual, someone who can pull themselves by their shoestrings, is the macho ideal. They want to look tough, "I play by my own rules, damn what everyone else's think," and they only come across as immature and ignorant.

It’s mostly just living rent free in his head from what I can tell haha

Again, it’s fine, but it’s like people who read Harry Potter and say it’s the same thing as people who read James Joyce. There’s nothing wrong with Harry Potter, it’s fun!

People just aren’t handing out participation trophies for it. That’s the part that seems to bug them.

Anyways I feel like I’ve already invested too much here and I don’t want anything I say to come off as making fun, it’s not intend to. SO I’ll just back out.

What about people who bought 'Finnegans Wake' only to put it in their bookshelf?

Thank them for helping keep it in print and also put a little ding dong on the guy on their trophy. They’ll never notice.

As usual, the person with the flimsiest argument resorts to insults. About par for the course. Sooooooooooooooooo, I'll let this thread die.

I don't know if your comment refered to my comment, but my comment is not about your post but rather what your post has turned into. I defend you but don't have the patience for where this post is heading.

Because they don’t look at their bookshelf! It’s a joke unrelated to the thread! I should definitely have stopped when I said I would, I just thought it’d get a laugh

Hey, we are trying to still make some use of your thread and have some fun.

Hey I had tried to steer it into a show and tell of cool trees that deviate from the norm, but I got shot down right quick so 🤷‍♂️
