Winged Elm or Cedar Elm?

Very nice.
Do you have updates and those 2 trees airlayed from the same tree?
i forgot about those guys. the small one rooted, but i didn't like the way it looked and tossed it. the larger of the two made it to 2020, but got tossed because i didn't like the way it looked.

Looking good, Darth. This has a bright future. Let it grow completely unchecked for the remainder of the year and possibly next. You'll have to grow out big leaders to heal those large chops. Could be a great tree in 10 years or so.

i had plucked some leaves covering the trunk earlier in the year just in case any more buds wanted to pop

What are those jagged growths on the new branches? That almost follow the branch along like a long fin. I see that on some 1-2 year old sweetgums I’d like to yamadori on my property but I’m not sure if that’s supposed to be there or if it is fungal or something?

yeah, it's just corky bark. probably why they call it winged elm. all the sweetgum in the woods around my area do ths same thing.

I'm going to try a thread graft when spring rolls around.

still only a few roots coming off the trunk, but they still populated the pot. screwed to board(hope he likes ceder), cut under callus, zipped to colander.

im thinking ill wait till the buds start to change color in spring to collect and chop these two trunks back. i was going to add some more soil and get some foil to combat the upcoming summer heat.

first ball was full of roots and starting to dry out when i checked last week, so i i added about an inch of soil all around. foliage above the layer is showing signs of nutrient deficiencies.

went to peep at one of the two ground layers i did this spring, and oh baby, it looks good. collecting and trunk chopping this winter before budburst.

checking wire on these future airlayers. it's almost been a month since i bent a few of this years shoots on a new mother cutting thats about 2 years old.. wiring cuttings after they've rooted is too late. and besides that, i still haven't seen a good root base from a cutting yet. so, im just going to try airlayers on shoots ive bent after they've grown out for 3, 5, 10 years 😁.
