So today I said goodbye to my cottonwood. Truth be told, it's a relief. As much as I learned from the experience, the tree was going nowhere.

At the same time, the little displaced and uprooted Honeysuckle urban yamadori I collected is doing great in the pasta strainer I put it in. It was a shock how quickly water evaporated. I'm watering it every day now, but it seems to be responding well to the conditions. Might just have to transfer all of my little trees to the strainers I've collected from Volunteers of America. It's cool because it forces you to engage with the tree much more often. I could, however, see it being a problem if you aren't able to get to your trees for more than a few days.

Spent 3 hrs defoliating and another 1 1/2 hrs pruning, 1st pass, prune more tomorrow and re-pot my biggest. BRT...
Sort of got out of control over last summer and winter.

So, I'm pretty sure I cut down this yew about 10 years ago, and today I discover a little shoot...

Random seed from 10 years ago that suddenly germinates? Random seed from somewhere else? Root still alive and sending up a sucker?

Might need to investigate that last one...

Did a death check on my trees after being gone for a week. To my surprise and delight, there were no casualties. Thank you son, I must have found the magical $ amount to insure success.

Spent another 3 1/2 hrs pruning branches and a bit of wiring, still some ugly ones but enough for now, hoping for bud back and new shoots first. Also lots root work. I reclaimed about 5/8 inch of nebari by trimming a lot of fine surface roots away but that left a few finger size roots showing. I shortened some but didn't want to push it so they are barely covered with soil. Should have done it a long time ago...but.. The tray image is all roots.

I lost some really terribly grown but healthy maples by defoliating them. How do you know if or when they have the strength and energy to do it?

I think it's brazilian rain tree...
Yes it's a Brazilian Rain Tree and Defoliating them is not an issue and preferred when re-potting if healthy. I have done it in March as well under "Grow Lights".
This was it in 2004 (6 years old) grown from a small cutting.

Last weekend was the garden tour. Look how tidy I got my benches! I had to hide a lot of trees in the basement. No clue how many people came through my yard specifically, but the organizer said more than 450 maps were sold. I handed out at least 50 bonsai club pamphlets to interested people and gave one Portulacaria afra to a guy that was really excited and has done a beginner class.

Some very nice roots there. how do you like the clam shell device?
They are so much easier to use than plastic, especially with zip ties. I had a lot of failures last year because in my climate the plastic/wire method just stayed too wet. On the clamshell balls you can see the roots clearly and there's good drainage to release moisture.
