The Accent (Companion) Plant Thread

I cant even keep weeds alive as an accent!

These didnt make it, as well as a few other flowering weeds I tried. Currently has a wild violet (??) 'bulb' in it.

Any tips on keeping accent plants? Soil? Collecting safely? Light?

I reckon setting em in a tray of soil is best.
Use fines.
Spring collection. Or mad roots.
Chop em low and let them grow!

Here's a failed rescue elm that was snapped off ill by someone.
Now harboring moss.

image.jpeg image.jpeg Two years ago I was going to give some my coworkers chicks and hens in pots as Christmas gifts. They ended up getting wine and I kept the chicks for myself. I've gotten rid of some but here is the last of them. Don't know anything about accents and not sure if this counts but I think they look cool when they start growing over the side and hanging. Some sort of Japanese pot, can't recall the maker at the moment.

Got a little fern today and put it in one of my plastic training pots. There wasn't nearly as many roots as I expected. The soil was absolutely soaked and it stank a little when I removed the majority of the soil.

Also scraped up some weedy looking thing and dropped it into a small pot. Not sure if it will make it. I didn't remove the old soil, but I worked new soil into it.

Speaking of soil, what do you guys generally use for these companion plants? Bonsai soil? Nursery mix?

I use the sifted out dust fines from my bonsai mix.

Also a good Anti fiddle technique.

I just realized.....
This looks terrible with the stalk dead center.

This is this year's "patch of earth dance".
Which was actually growing in the sandpit at the park.
Throw it there and see what grows.20160421_064707.jpg
You can see some placed moss. The rest is
"top dressed" as per the "Tree Stylers" and the Generation Bonsai video...
Well see how that turns out.
