Had an interesting weekend. I had found an Ash juniper at a nursery north of Austin and decided that driving to pick it up was as cheap as shiping and much easier on the tree.OPnly problem was when the time came my eyes were giving me fits so my poor wife had todo all the driving. What a trip. It was 106 in Austin. I no longer think it's hot here until it gets over 100.
Anyway the tree is a bushy SOB , about 3' X 3' with a 4" + trunk. These pics are from the nursery. I'll try to get better ones soon.
I'm saving this guy for a workshop in Albuquerque in Oct so sugestions are welcome.

This famous Texas drout has been going on for almost three years in Central TX so the tree is lankey as hell. Might only be able to prune and clean it up till it ramafies. Like Walter sais . it should look like a bird could fly into the tree. With this one the bird could have a party complete with a live band.

Anyway the workshop will be by a lady from San Diego who is a student of Roy Nagatoshi so she should know ragedy assed junipers. Probably tell me to graft shimpacu on it.

whatever you do, never ever put it under shade cloth of any kind. It will die in a matter of days. I found out the hard way. Full sun forever.:)

I heard that ash junipers were declared a nuisance in west Texas and you go out and buy one...

Thery don't even occur in West Texas. My uncle in central Texas used to pay my brother and cousind to kill the damn things. We'd hook a BIG chaion between two tractors and drag a whole pasture in a day. Killed thousands of them. Who knew.

Tom , mine went under shade cloth just to avoid moving shock. Only staid there for a couple of days. Looks great.

I think most traditionalists will tell you to graft shimpaku on it. There's nothing wrong with that, just a preference for some people. I have seen lots of grafted and ungrafted california and sierra junipers, and both types of foliage can look great. Let us know how the workshop goes.

NICE. I have a bunch of them in collection. Shade is OK for a couple days only then ease them into sun. The tricky part is watering. I have some that I water and fertilized like crazy and some that the same activity KILLS them dead in a few days.

I would take a couple years and gradually, very gradually trim back branches and never take much off at one sitting. You can do it a couple times a year...the best of which is winter time.

MBP in Phlugerville. Mike said the tree had been there for at least 10 yrs cause it was there before 9/11. Makes me feel like it's gonna be kinda hard to kill.

If I ever get to where I can collect myself maybe we can do some trading. I'd like to have another Ashi and some pinochetti. Don't know if you've ever come into contact with the latter but they are Texas natives , mostly west of you. We have monosperms , depeneau ( SP ? ) , scpolorum and coaholensis ( a derivative os subspecies of pinochetti ) here

Brian , if you have access to calies and sierras I'd love to trade with you or even buy outright if the price is right.

Never been to Pflugerville nursery but I will this fall. I've collected 50+ junipers...one is my almost No. 1 tree is 150+ years and it's a little fart of a tree. I collect during deer season, the best time I think. I lifted it off a cliff.
I'd be happy to see if I could find a place to dig in Jan/Fed if you can make it. As mentioned, most are HAPPY for you to get the 'bad trees' off their land. I have no idea what monosperms , depeneau ( SP ? ) , scpolorum and coaholensis ( a derivative os subspecies of pinochetti ) are.
What I really do in digging time is collect bald cypress. I picked up 21 last season. I'm crazy for BC!

@ art-rodrigues;
I would but for 2 issues; it's easier to post at work using T-1 line rather than at slow connection at home-I'm off to Kefalonia in a couple days so I'm packing, adjusting bonsai sprinklers and drip irrigation system, etc...

This year sucks as we've committed ourselves to tye MOUSE ( Disneyland m) in Nov so I won't be able to fart till next summer probably. Ironman , look those guys up. Monosperma is probably the best as it ramifies well. Deppeneau is alligator juniper and is probably the wierdest. Has bark like an alligator
