Absolutely amazing it was that fast!
Yup,it was great to see that first thing in the morning before work.I pulled away the leaves and there they were. These were vigorous cuttings. They grew to five feet last year in a matter of months and then over wintered in the grow bed.
I had a feeling that layering at the bottom of the tall plant would give fast results, but I thought it would at least be 6 weeks.I might be able to make some twiggy branches to work with before the season is done.
Thanks!

Air layers potted up.
Wow! Only 15 days.o_OWent way faster than I thought it would.
Here are some photos of the layers I potted up this evening.I have 5 of them.
Some have wiggly trunks, so I don't think they will make good brooms.Others are straight though and will be brooms.
Some of them will be chopped back even further here in a day or two when I decide.
Just gonna' keep some small trees.Meandering little forest trees or some informal type broom.
I am going to restrain and cut leaves to make more twigs on the branches for the rest of this season. In late Autumn they will get wrapped up to bring into tight V form or some will get wired. Then I should be defoliating next season.
Thanks!

It was soft akadama and orchid spahgnum.I like this way better than plastic bags. But sometime you have to use plastic bags if the layer is high up on a flimsy tree.
Thanks.

air layer king?
Hey,I'll take it.Beats no air layers at all.I believe since these were young trees and it was hot and I did the layer at the base of the tree was why the roots pushed so fast. Not to mention the akadama and the great aeration.I put rooting gel on the cut also and scraped the sapwood to a pith with a razor to remove any residual cambium.
Thanks!

Air layers are pruned and ready to grow.

So,this is what I decided to do with the 5 air layers.Looks like 2 or 3 will be brooms and the others will be possibly informal broom or forest trees.
Going to get as many twigs on the branches as I can this season and then wrap them up to the trunk with ribbon or wire for the winter so everything will point up.
Then next season they should get twiggy with defoliation.
I am going to start 5 more layers like this tomorrow ,since it only takes two weeks ,and have a bunch to choose from and keep the ones that I find to be good after next year.
I'm totally diggin' the roots with this way of doing things.

I do not know what is the fasted/ best way for this and next year? Letting things grow this year will promote more root growth and more top growth next year. You will lose some "twigs" bud you might have lots to chose from next year. on the other side they just grow fast...

Thanks,Dirk. From what I have found ,there are many ways to proceed to form broom Zelkova. The method I employ is for small trees.I learned a method to cut leaves and trimming that makes twigs and is only to do in first season.
Then they get wrapped up and are ready for defoliation the following season.
Maybe the pictures will show my approach.
Thanks

.

Result of two defoliations

Here are the result of two defoliations this season about a month apart, when they came into growth again.
Every time it gets a little more crazy looking, but I think I am going for one more this season then wire in autumn to shape it up.

Well I have 5 more of the little guys air layering.
It has been 9 days and I see the first root forming.I still cannot believe they get to this in only nine days.
I am having a lot of fun with this!
My first batch are potted up, pushing buds and starting to grow in only 24 days from the start of the ring bark:D
Something tells me I will have this little guy potted within seven days and ready to start a mini-broom.
