I collected this tree in the Ozark "mountains" this winter (February 2022). Didn't know the species at first, but it had a great base and really neat craggy bark down at the bottom. Here is a picture with the roots as I was potting up in Feb.
It did well this year. Two things that I noticed…1)seems to appreciate a little bit of shade in mid-summer in my climate.
2) did not put out an additional flush of growth when pruned in early September. Next year I’ll do the major pruning around May (post harden) and then some light pruning at leaf drop if needed.
Great fall color!
Update: almost two years post-collection.
It’s doing quite well. I did some light leaf drop pruning on it to hopefully set it up for a good spring. Looks like I have a few flower buds prepped for next year.
The one challenge I have with the tree is that it is a challenge to get it to keep extending and thicken its branches (it likes to keep putting out suckers and back-budding near last years chop site at the trunk…too much back budding!)
