but the base of my small Dawn Redwood does!

Should I try to remove it?
If so How and What do I use that won't damage the tree.

Vinegar! and a lil’ brush. Or dish-soap.. but I’d go vinegar (PERSONALLY).. Too caustic for survival..

As kids, we would “draw” in velvet mosses with vinegar and a q-tip.

Even if you kill it with vinegar, the yellow network left is usually stong enough to tear certain types of bark off anyway.

Prevention is Key.

Let it dry and shrink then remove it.
