So I got this red maple(which I understand is not a good bonsai specie) as an impulse buy while at Home Depot. Can anyone who has played around with A. Rubrum before tell me how much abuse it can take this time of the season?
Can it take both significant chop + repot? Or should I just wait until early spring?

Thanks,

As a general rule you shouldn't do any drastic work on maples this time of year. An exception may be trident maple, if you live in a warm climate. But even then, chopping and repotting would be risky.

The product label said "Acer Rubrum". Not sure how accurate they are. I just picked it up because it may be used for double trunk maple.

Acer rubrum have stunning color, if that's what it is... There's a lot of diversity in leaf shape but I have no experience with ginnala. I probably would have picked it up too. But I haven't gotten to the point of refinement where rubrum is supposed to be a let down. Oh yeah and you probably shouldn't be doing anything drastic to this tree until late winter. Except that wedge thing

Thanks for the info. I'll just let the tree be until late winter.
Here are the pic of the leaves and the back side (I'll likely get rid of the middle trunk).
