Anybody Ever Try One Of These?

Nice progression, lovely flowers. I think you did a great job with what must be difficult material.

Update:

Well, after waiting for what seemed like an eternity, two of the buds finally opened. A third is on its way. Hopefully, I can increase the number next year and get them closer to the trunk.

That photo of the partially-open bud is of such a quality that you should print and frame it.
Great pot choice, too. My star magnolia has flower buds beginning to swell. I’m actually hoping it waits until after our silhouette show in a couple of weeks. We had a freakish warm spell for three days last week with temps in the 50’s, and trees in the greenhouse are waking up early.

Sounds like a job for Ethanol!

Indeed...Mrs 2020_0805 Edit debug (2).jpg
This was a perfect form for 'Royal Star' in 2011 in the shape of a deer antler rack and was going to be full of blooms and alas, was disfigured in the first Winter From Hell in 2012, and the balance of the top killed in the second Winter From Hell, 2013. It has taken 7 years to recombobulate to the top and this winter was very moderate so I expect a glorious show, muy pronto.

@Mellow Mullet An excellent progression on what is an absolutely wonderful tree. Truly captures the form and essence of magnolias in miniature.

If it hasn't been already, this progression thread should be added to the species progression chain thread as an example for magnolias.
