Went on a collection trip with fellow members of the Nashville Bonsai Society. It was my 1st time. Had a blast!

This was my first collected tree. Amercain hornbeam, I think.

Dig it out. Wash the dirt off. Cut some roots. Potted up in bonsai substrate. Water and shade. (Outside)

Advice on tree selection?
Technique of digging it out and burlap ok?
Suggestions on the future development?

You collected a little more earth then you needed too, must have been fun to haul back. I usually use a plastic trash bag. With hornbeam you should bare root it, seal any chop right away, pot in a good mix and never let it dry out but not soppy wet. Then let it do it's thing

shovels tend to really damage roots....I find it much better to use a saw for collection.

I like that, I dug thru rocks yesterday with my fiskars folder, have edged the lawn with it....

And it still went thru the trunk and roots with little effort.

I think that I would cut another 1/2" or so off, then seal.
CW

at this potted if it's potted up, do not touch it! Hornbeam don't like to be touched with after being collected(or anyt ree) - Plus you want a little be extra trunk with hornbeam as they can be iffy to backbud.

Reviewing some of these threads as I get ready to collect some trees this winter. I had a couple of questions.

1. Should you seal cuts on the roots or dust with rooting hormone or just leave them alone?

2. Would it be appropriate to screw newly collected material to a board?

Any feedback is appreciated

Um yeah. I was going to say it looked like an elephant’s trunk. But I could have been wrong. Or maybe not.

The top died off and i only had one bud come off the main trunk. Repotted last spring. Suggestions are welcome. 20190302_150326.jpg20190302_150350.jpg
