chopped up Azaleas

but with the nursery guy standing there it was hard to dig around in them to find out.

You're better off telling them what you're doing so they understand you'll be taking care of their stock, well, except for the outer branches!

You gotta be careful you don't scrape the bark off the surface roots, you can't do it right AND look over your shoulder!

I gotta find me a place like that.
Or not!

Sorce

So a few questions.

What are the names of the varieties that have solid color flowers but with a stripe in them? I saw one that was white with a red stripe that I'd kill to own.

Is there maybe a link for guidelines to cutting back satsuki? I am getting some more in the next few weeks hopefully.

I tried a hino crimson azalea once after it bloomed but alas it did not make it. It did however get me very much criticism from my family. They told me I was killing it when I was cutting it back and I wanted so badly to prove them wrong lol.

I am all about the trades! I have an azalea FARM on the other side of the city from me.., about a 45 minute ride or so... So I can get a HUGE number of varieties myself, but I'd sure like to get one of those Johgas!

I think we can work something out. I would love to have a Miyuki. PM me and we can try to work a deal.

Well... In short, yes. You have certainly missed the ideal time.

Actually, I new that. I was being a bit facetious. With all this new material ya can't help but get anxious to see what sort of potential you can uncover.

The Miyuki has a bloom like that as well..
I posted a few pics earlier in the thread. There are literally thousands of azaleas out there though, and I can't imagine how many have the varied blooms. Miyuki, Kaho isanother I think, I have a "Gumbi" variety (some sort of funky Gumpo..) that has a little variance from light pink to darker link, but no stripes... Some white Gumpos will throw small pink stripes on their blooms... So many out there man...

It is a legit question though and @ getting"anxious":
Oh absolutely... And from that I have learned many plants CAN be successfully repotted in MY climate during this time of year. Maples, Juniper, Elms, most any D tree.. Maybe not a pine you have on a schedule of decandling... If it is still recovering from being decandled a repot soon after is prolly too much- but one being grow. Out or not "in training yet" is usually fine... I just do not really like the results I have had from doing an azalea this time of year. Results may vary by climate. I know Bama gets a little colder than here in the winters ( Froze my damn nips off at the Pappa John's Bowl one year! DAYUM IT WAS COLD!) but I bet most the trees I listed are fine for a Fall ( Sept- early October) repot where you live as well.l
This is a VERY busy time of year for me.. Spent all morning repotting cuttings taken earlier in the season! Dug a few trees out of the ground and potted them up in the past week... A couple JM, and one Trident..

Not sure I want to reveal my source before i get what I want.:p But, since you don't live in the area, Indian Creek Wholesale Nursery. I may actually wind up with some I am willing to trade. Some of what they had were a pot full of sticks with no defined trunk. I tried to pick some with single large trunks, but a couple had extra plants in the pot. Probably just they way they repotted them, but with the nursery guy standing there it was hard to dig around in them to find out. I'll start a thread tomorrow an post some pictures. Is it too later in the season to repot or chop them back?
Hmmm 3hr 14 minutes.....

I always thought that SC had about the same climate as AL. But I guess, with the coast and all, you're probably a little milder. Especially since I am at the far mother part of AL (10 minutes from the TN state line). Some winters we hardly get down to freezing but we have had 10° weather. The nursery where I bought these was repotting Azaleas today. Looked like mostly slip potting though.

I do think we are similar honestly... I am basing my judgement of your winters off what was basically one weekend I spent there for a bowl game, so I don't know much.

I see.

Has anyone dealt with these guys?

http://satsuki-bonsai.com/nae/index_USD.html

They have some varieties that I would love to have but they say they are 'seedlings' and they send you a backup incase the color isnt true?

Their prices aren't cheep for seedlings that my not be true to the parent. Not sure I would spend that kind of money.

I've never spent much time in SC but lived in NC for three years growing up. I remember their climate being similar to what we have here in North Al.

Woohoo! My chopped up azaleas are starting to bud all over! I can just see the buds for now but I am happy.

So, I was going to post about these guys on John's thread about drastically pruning azaleas, but I want one to keep pics separate and track progress without spamming his thread! So, time for the photo dump!

Hard tot ell, but there are tiny little buds popping around that little scar on the front, so this one is moving.. it was chopped weeks after the first one.

Photography assistant obediently NOT touching the plants! :)

Update on the first tree in this post (2nd one did not make it!)
Thinking of removing the branch on the right... Using an angle similar to the second pic below as the front

Oh wait, there's more...
Satsuki "Miyuki"- this is one I am super excited about! These are very horizontal growers, tiny leaves, GORGEOUS multi-colored blooms with white, Pink, and swirled blooms on the same plant! This is an experiment to see how it reacts to a major chop. I know the pink blooms can be more dominant on some of the multi-colored blooming plants (from what I have read anyway..), so I am hoping it keeps the bloom variance after the chops.

Satsuki "Beni Kashima"-This one is a MONSTER!! With some MONSTER wounds.. Branches were literally growing below the original soil level and all sorts of mess, so it took some cutting to get back to the bones! I was able to salvage a good many ground layered multi-trunkers from these branches I cut off and I am really excited about them! They did not miss a BEAT when I repotted them and this big guy is throwing out new buds at a fast pace right now...

The blooms- great red color, cool multi-layer almost rose like bloom.

Miyuki Madness!!! Love this little tree... Let it bloom, let it grow (heal up the bigger wounds..), little light pruning after blooms to encourage some ramification, maybe start wiring it a bit more than just the 1 guy wire I have on one branch currently- that is the plan for next year. The following year- into a better bonsai pot and BANG, BOOM, KAPOW= BONSAI!! #DONE... Well.. they are never "done"... but I have a two year plan to get this guy into a smaller/ "real" bonsai pot and I think it will make a really nice little tree after only about 3 years of work!
