Just thinking about the future and hoping that the whole side of the trunk isn't dead....I'll find out when carving time comes....which will be when the new leader gets to about 3/4" thick or better.

Found this picture online from Harry Harrington.
Hoping to get my tree there someday, the transition looks good to me here, I'd love to see the other side.

Beautiful blue pot on the last tree. I dont think it would be bad even if the side of the trunk is dead, since the wood is hard and won't rot you could have a very nice carved feature.

Leaves off now.
First bulk of carving done....just followed the natural die back line for now.
Gonna let it go for a year and reassess the carving needs.

Man, the growth of the girth on that leader is very nice.

I'm not familiar with the way you diagonally chopped to the leader. What is the reasoning behind the long downward strip you carved? Does that help with the callus/transition somehow?

Edit: Ah I see, that was just because of the natural dieback. my bad

Yeah, the initial chop was flat. Just carving with the lifelines
