Found this privet growing in the landscaped area around my neighborhood. I asked one of the landscape guys if I could collect it and he said sure. I threw on my yellow vest and dug it out with hardly a second glance from anyone in the neighborhood.

I had to remove a ton of really dense clay so it was basically bare rooted. I planted it in 90% pumice 10% bark and it’s putting on a bunch of new growth.

I’ll probably prune some of the problem branches in the next couple of weeks. From what I’ve seen it looks like privets can be carved so I’m thinking I can do that next year at some point.

Harry Harrington is your man for privet carving, just give him a Google search including the word privet and you’ll have days and days of inspiration.
Started watching the first video on youtube and you're not kidding! The guy is an artist at carving wood. I'm going to have to see if he ever tours the US meeting with bonsai clubs.

I have some really old privets on my property. I can confirm they air layer rather easy. Also, cuttings just stuck in the dirt in spring they root. Back budding on really old wood…not the results I was hoping for on some chops. Fun shrubs to play with!
