bought a decent camera through my biz the other day. Didn't get much chance to get tree shots after doing product photos, but im excited for spring to get some better shots of everything!

How are all the sages doing? Have they seemed to recover well?

I’m letting zone inappropriate material die off and replacing with appropriate material. No maples for me

Anyway, I might just have to find myself in the middle of BLM land with a pot and shovel

Thriving. Very excited to check the roots come spring and also collect a few much bigger specimen. I’ve already got a few scouted!

Hoping to get around to experimenting with concrete and hypertufa pots this summer. Any pointers?

I use this. I’ve been using it since my architecture school days. I make the molds from 1/4” foam core. You mix this stuff very runny, boarder lime watery. The mold has to be completely leak proof or it’ll fail miserably. This stuff is great though cause it hardens in 15 minutes. I then pop the mold and sand and shape immediately. I did very little shaping on this one, only beveling the corners. I then soak it in a bucket for several days trying to get any lime to leach out in the water. It’s a fun process. I probably could have got more detailed with the mold but I didn’t. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Thanks!
Good to know the foam core works. All I keep finding on YouTube are the two bowls for a mould or sand mould type, and I was afraid I was going to have to buy 50lbs of plaster or something.

I use hot glue for the seams also. Gotta use the shiny foam board otherwise it wouldn’t work right. After I glue the joints I come back through and lay down a tone of hot glue on the outside joints to make sure it is sealed. Though this stuff dries quick it stays somewhat soft for a few hrs. I’ve got a few I made like 8 hrs ago that are still going and have taken on some really cool patina and texturing. Same material same technique.

Awesome. I'll give it a go when I get the time.

Some scouting. Also a pic of just a tiny fraction of the choices. Literally thousands of acres. Dog for scale in a few of the pics.

there is really no reason any of us in the western/southwestern United States shouldn’t be using these as Bonsai. The collect very easy and thrive in pot culture. Great twisty trunks and aromatic and beautiful foliage.

Here is one of two that was repotted not too long ago and look at the extensions I’ve already got! Plenty to wire out come mid to late summer. Maybe even sooner. 21063B26-B275-4A1E-ADF9-DB56FBC41FF9.jpeg3CDC7C9B-4C60-4F6C-ABB1-ACF012D949DE.jpeg

I’ll share some pics of my recent collections here soon. Got some nice size specimen. No small ones this time around as promised though.

Danny, can you describe your general care regimen for these? Assuming full sun and lots of water? Do you repot every year - how quickly do they fill the pot with roots? I recently acquired my first of this species 😁
