Dallas Bonsai Garden Contest

Congratulations to you initial winners and thank you Dallas Bonsai for providing this opportunity. Personally I like Vance's additional suggestion that we all use the same species (juniperus procumbens), but maybe it would be better to allow any species considering the junipers might not be good material for those in hotter climates.

It is my understanding that a lot of those Procumbens Junipers you find in Malls and road-side vendors come from Florida.

Will there be a separate thread started for this in a week or two? I figured as much, but just making sure.

Working out some details before announcing. May delay to middle of April, I know even here in Dallas we have had freezes in April. Just want to make sure we get some good prizes together and most everyone has the opportunity to join in.

That's good to hear. The Big Box stores don't even have any nursery stock as yet and they don't know when they will.

My Vote, is for not limiting the material to junipers...

I like the idea of all using similar material. It would make the judging much easier for Dallas Bonsai and I believe Thomas J. of Dallas Bonsai is extremely versed in procumbens styling and therefore judging.
Tona

I would second the motion that it not be limited to junipers. ( I'm allergic) but that aside, it gives a pretty good advantage to those who have styled junis before over those who have not.
Just my thought.

Agreed...
Besides, what happens if one goes to the big box stores and the
only junipers available, are "Crappier" than normal ??? :)
But, beside it is a Boxwood that has some movement...
Or an Azeala, Bougie and the list goes on...

As long as a before photo is taken to compare with the work
that was done by the artist after...
I think that any judge would easily be able to identify the
skills and talent that went into the tree.

Can use the same argument for Big Box stores, assuming you are all talking about, Wal Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, Kmart, Meijers or Manards? This is a problem I have had for years; people that do not use the nursery trade for material usually equate the same with the Big Box stores. The Big Box stores generally do not have the best stuff. So I think we have to boil it down to what sources we are really talking about.

Right, would you think the price limit is more important than the store or nursery?

Yes, I believe you have to keep the price at $50.00 or below, and I think you have to eliminate bonsai nurseries, mostly because there are very many people that do not have access to a bonsai nursery the quality of those found on the West Coast, where they seem to flourish like party stores.

Ditto. Please don't make me buy another box store juniper. I already have rows of them. Maybe it could be limited to evergreens?

Congrats!

I am interested to hear feedback from Vance after a year or two. :)

I'll let you all know what I think of the Akadama, honestly according to my usage and maintenance practices. I'm convinced it will do not harm but I am uncertain it is the magic elixir some claim it to be. However if it is------it's my plan to find out why.

Bump: I'm hoping to see some official posting about this some time soon.

Holding off a little while longer to let most of the freezes pass. We will be posting more information soon.

Have seen nothing of this thread for a while so I thought I would give it a bump. Stock is starting to show up in nurseries around here.
