Experimenting air layer Trident Maple and Crabapple at bud break

Did the cut on Wenesday 2/21/24.

Bagged them up today 2/25/2024.
Total 10... 9 TM, 1 Crabtree.
Medium... straight peatmoss and no rooting hormones

Now... we'll wait....

I didn't even realize that they have been four weeks already. I haven't look at them as thoroughly since I think it is still a bit too soon. Will check it out later as the top grown has definitely exploded. The crabapple is still pushing leaves though but it throw roots much faster based on previous airlayers. We will see...

Five weeks in.

Just looked at the air layers again and none show any sign of rooting. The foliage has starting to harden off. The crab is a bit slower to than th TM but I expect it to show roots before the TM.

The layers look pretty good. I’d be surprised if they don’t root at some point this year. I will appreciate the humor if they end up just rooting in the summer as usual with air layers.

Approaching 8 weeks and all I can see is one root from one of the trident....

Peat moss is what I use, love it. Never have to water it and easy to rinse out before potting up.

It has been around 3 months, am happy to report that 7 of them have rooted. Only three have not show any roots that I can see.
