Finally...A first and nice white pine

Hello all... Well, I have been a juniper guy for years, but I just purchased this nice specimen of a white pine..This is my first white pine. I had nothing against pines by any means. However, finding one with good branch and bud placement, without reverse taper and without emptying your wallet, has seemed almost impossible....

Had my eye on this one for a while.

Thanks BN... Yes, The movement is very nice on this tree...Finally, a white that has several very good aesthetic qualities. It's like you see them from a distance and think, oh, that looks good, then you pick them up and then you see.. aww.. Horrible reverse taper,, or bar branching all the way up, or no movement what so ever in the trunk...

I hate you, and I hate that white pine!

...well, not exactly, but you know what I mean, probably?
Here in So. Cal. all we can do is to look at those @#$%%^ pictures of white pines, because we will never ever get a chance to have one.

So, that's why my rant.

But your little tree is a beauty, for sure. I love that bark, and movement. And the needles with the white lining on the bottom side, remind me of Christmas and snow.

Damn it, I don't want to look at it anymore.

Thanks Attila...I have been looking at white pines for years and this one is exceptional. I almost feel guilty...lol... Here I am access to all these white pines and I pick up one now after like 10 years... However, like I said, this one had great aesthtics, health and a good price...

Hello Smoke,, I do not know the origins.. It was purchased at NE Bonsai,. I think that it actually might be an import from Japan..

White Pine grow great here in GA. There are a few people in the Atlanta club with specimen quality meaning $5,000+ Japanese White Pine. I'm purchasing a three tree rock planting of White Pine that was done 15 yrs ago at Brussels and has been living on the rock in GA for the last 12 yrs. You can see Brians white pine thread for more proof. He's in Alabama.

Al, the owners at NEBGs do a West coast buying trip about every year, so it is possible. They also are/were a quarantine center for importing.

Yes that was one of the Japanese imports that went through the 2 year post entry quarantine at the nursery.

I know I can grow them here in N. Georgia...what I can't do any more is take a 20 minute drive up Rt 495 every week or two to see what new goodies Hitoshi may have recently acquired. My one way 20mile trip is now more like 1200...but it didn't stop a couple of the guys I spoke with at the last Atlanta Bonsai Society meeting from making the trip up there this past summer to buy stock, and they weren't disappointed. There are always good/great trees for sale, and the prices can be extremely reasonable. Sorry to semi-hijack the thread, Rob, but MAN!!! do I miss being that close to such a great nursery.

It depends on where you are in Georgia or Alabama. As Cquinn pointed out, we've already had sub 32f temps and it will get colder for sure- last winter, we hit 8F one morning, and we had a week in January where it stayed in the low 30's for daytime highs. The further south you travel, though, the more tropical the climate becomes, which means consistently warmer summer days and nights, which I suspect is a bigger issue then lack of cold. My understanding is that Atlanta is approximately the southernmost area where you can successfully grow JWP (I think Brian and his JWP live in/near Birmingham, AL, which is approximately the same latitude/climate as Atlanta). Anyway, Since I've really hijacked this thread- "Sorry Rob, I really mean it this time", and "Hey, Bill".
